Protecting Biodiversity and Promoting Nature Conservation

Our Commitment to Biodiversity

At ICL, protecting biodiversity is a fundamental pillar of our sustainable development. Our alignment with regulatory frameworks and international best practices enables us to implement impactful biodiversity and conservation initiatives. Our approach covers all stages of our operations and involves restoration projects, stakeholder engagement and community involvement. Through innovative, technology-driven solutions, we are preserving biodiversity while ensuring that our operations harmonize with natural ecosystems.

How we do it

At ICL, we prioritize sustainable resource management and circular strategies to minimize our ecological footprints and optimize biodiversity outcomes. Our commitment to biodiversity & conservation begins at the planning stage of projects and continues through continuous assessment, monitoring, and optimization.

Biodiversity Assessments:
Data-Driven Decision-Making

Effective biodiversity & conservation relies on comprehensive biodiversity assessments. ICL invests in scientific research and collaborates with experts to enhance our understanding of local ecosystems. By utilizing advanced environmental studies, we ensure informed, data-based decision-making for conservation efforts.

Recent surveys at our Boulby site have highlighted a rich and diverse ecosystem. A Great Crested Newt survey confirmed that these amphibians are thriving in a reservoir on-site, prompting a full population study planned for Spring 2024.

Meanwhile, a reptile survey uncovered a small but promising slow worm population, suggesting potential breeding activity. Additionally, watercourse assessments, including electro-fishing and invertebrate studies, confirmed exceptional water quality, with species such as Brown Trout, Loach, and the endangered Eel flourishing in these habitats.

Nature Conservation and Restoration: Strengthening Ecosystems

Our sustainability strategy includes a strong emphasis on protecting biodiversity through habitat conservation and restoration projects. As a responsible steward of the land, we engage in active environmental rehabilitation and ecological enhancement programs to restore degraded areas and promote ecosystem resilience.

As part of our commitment to sustainable land management, we have undertaken erosion control and revegetation efforts, planting trees and shrubs in key areas such as Rieral del Tordell, El Fusteret Walk, and El Salí. Additionally, a 25-meter forest strip was cleared around our facilities to reduce wildfire risks, protecting both ecosystems and local communities.

Community Engagement:
A Collective Responsibility

ICL recognizes that local communities play an essential role in preserving biodiversity and reinforcing ICLs commitment to environmental stewardship. Employee involvement and volunteerism contribute to nature conservation efforts, bringing valuable local knowledge and innovative ideas to the table. By fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, we empower employees to be active participants in sustainability initiatives.

ICL actively restores and protects vital habitats, such as Sdom Saltmarsh Lake near the Dead Sea, a key refuge for migratory birds, where we monitor water quality and enhance vegetation. Additionally, ICL supports community nature conservation projects, including the Barn Owls initiative in the UK, providing safe nesting spaces to support declining populations.

Strategic Partnerships:
A Collaborative Approach

ICL collaborates with global organizations, such as the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), to advance strategies for nature conservation. As one of the world’s largest fertilizer manufacturers, ICL continuously innovates to develop nature-positive plant nutrition solutions that support sustainable agriculture while minimizing ecological impact.

Our efforts align with the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, that support the principles of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s Global Biodiversity Framework and is committed to implementing its goals and targets.
Additionally, ICL operates in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15: Life on Land, which calls for:
“Protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, and halting biodiversity loss.”

ICL recognizes the critical role of biodiversity protection and ecosystem preservation in achieving sustainable development. Aligned with global best practices, we prioritize reducing our environmental impact, with a particular focus on areas of ecological and cultural significance
